Raster Imaging Basics

RGB channels

Each image is made of a grid of pixels, small dots each of unique color. Each pixel is a mix of 3 channels, red ®, green (G), blue and each channel can have a value of 0 to 255, where 0 is total blackness and 255 is total intensity of the channel. A mixture of red 255, green 255 and blue 255 creates total whiteness.

Image size

Image size specified in pixels in the total horizontal and vertical count of pixels. Typical computer screen is 1024 x 768 pixels.

Image formats

Images are stored in a number of formats, each of them having advantages and disadvantages. Photo-realistic holiday photos

should be stored in JPEG format to save hard disk space. Images used for further production (for example for desktop publishing)

should be stored in TIFF, BMP or PSD format to preserve their quality. JPEG distortions may not be visible on the screen but they show up on high quality printer or press. Drawings and cartoon-like graphics (having less than 256 unique colors)

should be saved in GIF format to preserve the quality of solid color areas.
